Night Sweats Before Your Period: Why Your Cycle Heats You Up

Answer: two things happen before a period. Progesterone, which raised your temperature slightly after ovulation, is still high, and then estrogen and progesterone both drop. That drop can briefly unsettle your temperature control. Result: warmer nights and, for some, night sweats.

Your cycle and your temperature

Cleveland Clinic explains that progesterone raises basal body temperature after ovulation, which is why temperature-tracking methods work. In the late part of the cycle you're starting each night a touch warmer. As hormones fall right before the period, some people get hot-flash-like episodes.

Is it PMS?

Many people with premenstrual symptoms also notice lighter sleep, vivid dreams and waking up warm. Tracking a few cycles will show whether your night sweats line up.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if premenstrual symptoms seriously affect your sleep or mood, if your cycles change a lot, or if night sweats are happening outside that window too. In your late 30s and 40s, new period-linked night sweats can be an early sign of perimenopause.
